Montreal pics up

A few pictures from CHI 2006 in Montreal are over on Flickr. Lots from the botanical gardens, a costume shop, and pretty much everything I ate for a week.

It took every ouce of willpower I could muster to not try to eat that pie. I mean, that picture of pie.

What building is that in the background of the first picture? Reminds me of the coronation scene in LOTR. I like the pictures.

Re pie: It took every ounce of willpower of the three of us who shared it not to eat it all individually. (But then of course, at the last bite we ended up with the Zeno's Paradox of dessert splitting, halving it, and halving it again, and again, and again.)

Re building: It's the olympic tower next to the old cycling stadium (that's now the Biodome). The tower is really sheared like that. And kind of ugly.

Re building: You must have gotten its good side since, it looks decent from the pic. Well, it could also be because I'm heavily biased towards arches and curves.

Re pie: ["what's that over there?" (quick grab)] works quite well. ;-)

Damn you, now I'm all "home"sick and I want a panini for lunch.

The olympic stadium is where the Expos played until they decamped; I don't know what use it has now. They have an uber-fancy retractible roof that never quite works right, and the tower is visible for miles. I don't find it ugly, per se -- it's just a particularly striking part of the background. Too bad they charge so much to go to the top -- where the view is no worse than the view from the mountain.

I've never heard of firemen rappling off the observatory -- was there a small cat in distress?

The firemen were practicing repelling, I think. I saw two go over the edge, walk around a lower tier covered in brush for awhile, and then pretty much call it a day. Not too exciting.
